Two tales of Two Cities

"(...) a branch of Banco Santander, opened last month—the first bank inside a Rio favela. Guilherme Nicolas, the branch manager, hopes to sign up 10,000 customers. But he says most residents earn less than 1,000 reais ($600) a month, and some want loans to buy food. Insecurity and poverty have gone hand in hand in Rio. A safer city has a better chance of becoming a less socially divided one."

And the always alert Aydano André Motta reminds us.

"O primeiro censo feito aqui nos trópicos, em 1872, aferiu que 24% das escravas pagavam seus pecados no serviço doméstico. Passaram-se 138 anos, e a Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego do IBGE refez a conta: 23,3% das negras e pardas que trabalham ganham a vida como... domésticas. O empate técnico está lá, devastador, no Relatório Anual das Desigualdades Raciais no Brasil. Prova mais esmagadora de nosso imobilismo social não pode haver. (...)"

Useful ambitions

An ambitious goal involving the new strategies of Brazilian Foreign Ministry makes for a heck of picture (even without the mainstream media consensus)! At least for now. Only time will tell who will have the last laugh on the frontpage. Washington Post's Jackson Diehl has made his choice on who it will be. REUTERS/Ricardo Moraes

Two sides, one frontier

With a lot at stake, the two brigades take position on the Arizona law, with all eyes and fucus the upcoming elections.

The left part.

And what does the right wing have to say?

Maybe it's the last big debate in the current political system governing US politics.

The Giant is waking up

If the 11 million illegal immigrants (which the US economy can't live without) were sleeping, it might mean a oforever nightmare for many politicians in favor of the new Arizona law. Through boycotts and world class community organization, big crowds have protested in and outside of the United States, calling the world's attention.

Maybe it's the prelude of an outstanding victory? Many analists say that the Immigration Reform can become that final breath of the radical right in the United States, bringing the Republican party to a "moderate right" majority.

But where does the rest of the continent (and its borders) stand on the state of immigration?

Are Immigration laws in Mexico really stricter than Arizona's?

By the way, the law was softned to "allow police to have the right to search only suspects who have been involved in any illegal activity". Better let Good'Ol'Rilley make things clear.

It's the community organization for what's right, stupid!

With one of the most decisive elections soon to come, the two largest nations in the world re-think their political systems. But is the capacity to organize for comprehensive "game changing" legislation really possible in around communities in both societies??

Whether it's about Illegal Immigration or Illegal Politicians who are up for elections, the result of both legislations have an enormous potential to make a global impact, resulting in major change in the political and social life and in the economy of all countries in the Americas.
